Presenter Biographies

Gina Abbiate is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Math Acceleration Specialist at San Diego Mesa College. She has 13 years of experience teaching pre-transfer level courses. She facilitates weekly professional learning sessions focused on growth mindset and closing equity gaps in math classes at all levels. Contact: gabbiate@sdccd.edu

Joanne Rossi Becker is a Professor Emerita of Mathematics at San José State University. She taught in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at SJSU for more than 30 years, working with pre-service secondary school teachers. She is also the Project Director of the Santa Clara Valley Mathematics Project, one of the statewide CSMP projects.

Janet Bowers is a Professor of Mathematics and the Director of the new Mathematics and Statistics Learning Center at San Diego State University. She is involved in a variety of student success initiatives for incoming and transfer students. Contact: jbowers@mail.sdsu.edu

Kyndall Brown is the Executive Director of the California Mathematics Project at UC Los Angeles, a statewide network of professional development organizations. Constantina (Dina) Burow is a Resource Teacher for secondary mathematics at San Diego Unified School District. She has taught high school mathematics for 22 years, then started work at the district to coach high school math teachers. Contact: cburow@sandi.net

Jarred Collins has been teaching various courses ranging from calculus to discrete mathematics for Accelerated College Program at San Diego Mesa College for the last 12 years. In addition to his work in the classroom, Collins has served as department chair for the last six years, and for the last two years has served as coordinator of the emerging College and Career Access Pathways program. Sharon Hughes is a Professor of Mathematics at San Diego Mesa College. For the past ten years she has taught for the Accelerated College Program at San Diego Mesa College, teaching courses ranging from intermediate algebra and statistics to calculus and linear algebra.  While teaching and the classroom have been her main focus, she has served in many roles including professional development committee chair, academic senator, student learning outcome department coordinator, and program review lead writer. Dawn Swanson Dawn Swanson is a college counselor at Kearny High School of College Connections and coordinates multiple dual enrollment programs with Mesa Community College. Jonathan Dolle is the Senior Improvement Specialist and Research Lead at WestEd. He is responsible for conceptualizing, planning, and implementing new approaches to field-based collaborative research that combine rigorous research methods with continuous improvement strategies. In this capacity, he leads a networked improvement community comprised of five high school-community college partners working to reduce the number of underserved students who enter college needing math remediation. He also leads the design, development and delivery of continuous improvement technical assistance to a network of eleven California State University teacher preparation programs. Guershon Harel is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at UC San Diego. His research interest is in cognition and epistemology of mathematics and their application in mathematics curricula and the education of mathematics teachers. Bri Hays currently serves as the Senior Dean of Institutional Effectiveness, Success, and Equity at Cuyamaca College, providing leadership in research, planning, and accreditation. She also serves as a Vice President for the RP Group and has previously held institutional research and planning positions at San Diego Mesa College and San Joaquin Delta College. Bridget Herrin is the Associate Dean of Research and Planning at San Diego Mesa College where she is active in the implementation and analysis of multiple measures assessment and acceleration in English and Math. She also directs the SDICCCA Regional Faculty internship program. She teaches Psychology and Educational Leadership courses at San Diego State University and local community colleges. John J. Hetts is the Senior Director of Data Science at Educational Results Partnership. Building on twenty years of experience in instruction and research in higher education, his work focuses on identifying untapped potential in educational data. His work on predictive modeling of student placement into and performance in foundational courses won the 2012 RP Group Best College Research Award (as the Director of Institutional Research at Long Beach City College) with colleagues Andrew Fuenmayor and Karen Rothstein, the 2014 ACCCA Mertes Award (also with Fuenmayor), and the 2015 RP Group Best Statewide Research Award as part of the Multiple Measures Assessment Project Research team. He received his doctorate from UCLA in Social Psychology with a specialization in Measurement and Psychometrics and holds a B.A. with Distinction and Honors from Stanford University.

Leah Kosmos is a Resource and Middle School teacher for the San Diego Unified School District. She is currently working at the district to coach math teachers. Contact: lkosmos@sandi.net

Mark Manasse is currently a full professor at San Diego Mesa College serving as their Instructional Learning Assistance (Tutoring) Coordinator, and is also the Learning Assistance Project (LAP) Co-Coordinator for 3CSN, a statewide professional learning organization. He has helped to create both NADE as well as CRLA certified tutoring programs, and has been on the board of both ACTLA and CalADE.  Mark received a BA in English from UC Berkeley, an MATESOL from the Monterey Institute, and a Ph.D. in Leadership from The University of San Diego.  Contact: mmanasse@sdccd.edu

Tammie Marshall and Terrie Nicols currently teach at Cuyamaca College. Marshall is a Professor and Chair of the Mathematics Department. She earned her Master’s Degree in Math Education from San Diego State University and Ed.D. in Education with an emphasis on Community College Leadership from San Diego State University. She began teaching in 1993 and was hired full-time at Cuyamaca College in 1997. Her dissertation focused on helping students succeed in the developmental sequence. After obtaining her Master’s degree in pure mathematics from SDSU, Nicols began teaching full-time at Cuyamaca College as a math instructor. Over the years, she became increasingly dismayed by the dismal pipeline success rates of students identified as underprepared for college-level math. Six years ago, she was motivated to take action with Katie Hern and Myra Snell of the California Acceleration Project.  She subsequently collaborated with faculty, administrators and staff at Cuyamaca College to make comprehensive structural changes to the basic skills math program and reform pedagogical practices.  Contact: Tammi.Marshall@gcccd.edu; terrie.nichols@gcccd.edu

Aly Martinez is a full-time Math Induction Mentor for the Sweetwater Union High School District, graduate from UC San Diego, and has previously taught at Gompers Preparatory Academy, The Preuss School at UCSD, and San Ysidro High School. Aly loves her family, Desmos, Dan Meyer, Google Drive, Donuts, Clothesline Math, Jo Boaler, Robert Kaplinsky, Coffee, nerdy jokes, and talking math with other teachers in person and on twitter (@askmrsmartinez). Audrey Mendivil has been a secondary math teacher for more than a decade, teaching in both San Diego and San Bernardino counties before joining San Diego County Office of Education in 2016. She is passionate about every student making sense of mathematics, and is dedicated to supporting middle school mathematics teachers through their unique and important work. Lilian Metlitzky is a Professor Emerita, California State University, Pomona, a mathematician and mathematics educator who is active in issues relating to college readiness and transitioning between K-12 and higher education. She leads the curriculum writing team for Mathematical Reasoning with Connections (MRWC), a new 4th year high school mathematics course. Contact: lmetlitzky@cpp.edu

 Melody Morris has worked as a math teacher and teacher leader in the Sweetwater Union High School District (SUHSD) for ten years. She is also a member of the Math Professional Alignment Council (MPAC), a collaboration between SUHSD and Southwestern College aimed at increasing student success in college math courses. Perla Myers and Amanda Ruiz are Professors of Mathematics at the University of San Diego (USD). Myers is also the Director of Access and Community Partnerships for USD’s College of Arts and Sciences, where she has been on the faculty since 1999. She also served as Associate Dean of the College, and Chair of the Mathematics Department. Myers earned her B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Houston, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of California, San Diego. Ruiz earned her Bachelor of Arts from U.C. Berkeley, a Masters and teaching credential from San Francisco State University, and a Ph.D. from Binghamton University. Joy Salvetti is the Director of the Center for College & Career Readiness at California State University, Sacramento (CSUS).  Experience and research have taught her the importance of building infrastructures of collaboration as she continues to take a leadership role in the development of the EAP Sr. Yr. Mathematics (ESM) program. Sharon C. Furtak is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at CSUS.  Dr. Furtak received her Ph.D. from Yale University; her expertise is in Behavioral Neuroscience as well as Research Methods and Statistics. Ravin Pan is a Professor in the College of Education at CSUS and has been a key developer of the EAP Sr. Yr. Kimberly Samaniego is the CSU/UC Director of Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project (MDTP) and Director of Mathematics Testing and Placement at UC San Diego.  She is focused on systems that provide access to high-levels of mathematics for students from all backgrounds. She earned her Ed. D. in Teaching and Learning from UC San Diego with an emphasis on teacher learning, educational reforms, and equitable teaching practices in math classrooms. Samaniego’s 20 years of experience as a secondary math teacher and department chair, instructor of preservice secondary mathematics teachers, and teacher-trainer provide insight and strength to her role in MDTP of supporting secondary mathematics education and educators throughout the state. Gabe Hanzel-Sello is Program Manager of Growth Sector, a California non-profit focused on workforce development. Growth Sector is implementing the STEM Core in collaboration with major employers and college partners in 15 community colleges in California, Maryland, and Colorado. Duncan Graham has most recently been Vice President for Instruction at San Jose City College.  Michael Venn is Assistant Dean of Math and Science at Community College of Baltimore County. Mindy Shacklett is the Mathematics Coordinator for the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE). A former high school math and physics teacher, she now supports mathematics teachers in San Diego County and Imperial County. Her focus of work is developing and facilitating professional learning for administrators and teachers in support of implementing the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. Myra Snell is a Professor of Mathematics at Los Medanos College and Co-Founder of the California Acceleration Project. In 2016, Washington Monthly included her and CAP Co-Founder Katie Hern in their list of the 16 Most Innovative People in Higher Education. Contact: snell.myra@gmail.com

Osvaldo Soto is the Director and Trang Vu is the Assistant Director and Curriculum Writer for the Discrete Math Partnership between San Diego State University’s Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Education (CRMSE) and Sweetwater Union High School District. Soto completed his Ph.D. in Mathematics and Science Education from a joint program between UC San Diego and San Diego State University (SDSU), a M. A. degree in Mathematics from SDSU, and a B.A. degree and a teaching credential from Point Loma Nazarene University. Soto has extensive experience mentoring teachers throughout San Diego County. His research interests include investigating connections between secondary teachers’ mathematical content knowledge and teaching practice. He seeks ways to empower teachers to do mathematics together and apply what they learn to their own teaching for their students’ benefit. Vu completed her M.A. in Teaching and Learning: Curriculum Design from UC San Diego. She also earned a B.A. degree in Applied Math and a teaching credential from UC San Diego. She has taught high school math in San Diego Unified School District for more than 25 years. Vu was selected as a Master Teaching Fellow for the Math for America San Diego Fellowship Program. Jonathon J. Singh is a Professor of Mathematics at CSU San Marcos and Palomar College. Singh has experience working with students in both the developmental and college-level math courses for the past eight years. He is well known for mentoring students to help them achieve their educational goals and objectives. Singh’s reputation extends to his abilities to establish and maintain classroom environments that enhance learning.  Kheng Tan Waiche is currently the Assistant Director of Proficiency Services at CSU San Marcos. She is a San Diego native who has more than 15 years of experience in education ranging from early childhood to higher education. Prior to working at CSU San Marcos, Kheng worked as a school counselor in the K-12 setting. In her current role, Kheng helps local high school students become college ready in English and math and teaches a first-year student success course at CSU San Marcos. Maria Zack is a Professor and Chair for the Department of Mathematical, Information and Computer Sciences (MICS), and Chair for the Department of Physics and Engineering at Point Loma Nazarene University. She and four MICS colleagues Ryan Botts, Associate Professor of Mathematics, Catherine Crockett, Associate Professor of Mathematics, Greg Crow, Professor of Mathematics, and Jesús Jiménez, Professor of Mathematics, teach a wide variety of mathematics and can speak to the skills that universities expect students completing college algebra to possess.
